La Bruguera has a long artistic history. It was built by the renowned Catalan landscape painter Casademont “Le Vieux” on land he bought from John Peter Moore, who had built a castle on the land next to the modern-day La Bruguera in Púbol. Moore was Salvador Dalí’s secretary and business manager. Casademont was an artist, and La Bruguera was his home, technically making him the estate’s first artist-in-residence.
Michelle, our co-director, took on the role of artist-in-residence when we bought the estate in 2015. A nature lover like Casademont, Michelle’s work takes a much more in-depth look at the polycrisis now affecting our planet, with powerful pieces exhibited across Catalonia that explore themes such as fossil fuels , climate change , colonialism, the origins of the modern obsession with economic growth, patriarchy, organised religion, and the pornification of contemporary pop music. You can see more of Michelle’s work on her website or Instagram .
In winter 2023, we welcomed another artist-in-residence: Edgar Massegú. Edgar is an artist who, like us, believes that art is key to kick starting the kinds of mindset shifts necessary for bringing humanity into balance with the ecosystems of our planet.
You can read more about Edgar on his website , which says he “understands art as a tool for social transformation; his works are created from a subversive view of reality, imbued with a certain visual poetry, highlighting social injustices and ecological disorder.” Edgar is also very active on Instagram .
