Project History

We’ve been working on this since the beginning of 2023, and in February of 2024, we starting planting hundreds of trees in a half-hectare of degraded land, which had been cultivated 20th-century-style, for the last few decades.

We started with soil regeneration techniques, trying to help recuperate and regenerate the soil biology, whilst building it’s mineral and nutrient content. We planted companion plants to work with the trees. We brought in many tonnes of organic matter, much of it obtained from the waste streams of local businesses and the public sector, and we inoculated this material with good bacterias and fungal friends, to reconstruct the soil ecosystem which had been degrading over the years.

February 2024, when we got friends and colleagues together to plant the first few hundred trees.

October of 2024, when we planted hundreds of other support plans in the rows of trees.

The Founders

Agroforesteria de la Bruguera is a collective effort by two families. If you have read this far in our website you likely already know Mike, Michelle and Frances -the team behind La Bruguera- and our dedication to bring about an eco-social transition of society. La Bruguera is our home, and an ecosystem that we take care of, as well as a toll for awareness-raising, since it is a Living Lab for actions inspired by the Permaculture and Degrowth Movements.

Regenerative Agriculture is not easy, especially in the context of 21st century capitalist food systems. So when the Kessell Family (Andreas, Sabine & Amélie) got in touch to collaborate it seemed like a great idea. The Kessells, in their own words “are investing in pioneering projects in Regenerative Agriculture. We identified La Bruguera as an idea place to demonstrate that a Regenerative Agroforestry System can be productive despite climate change.”

The Team

To the Púbol team of Mike & Michelle, we have been joined by Pau, the first employee of the new company.  He brings a deep knowledge of permaculture, a fascination for plants and the soil, an enormous musical talent and he is fundamental to the day-to-day functioning of the project. Pau takes care of the trees, manages the vegetable gardens, as well as handling orders and deliveries. He keeps the Agroforestry System healthy, and looking great, as we believe that a beautiful looking agriculture project is the best marketing we can do!
